TAG

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

This 2018 Warner Bros American comedy written by Rob McKittrick, Mark Steilen and directed by Jeff Tomsic in his debut as a director, is actually based on a true life story.

While we wait for newer review-worthy films to come out, I have decided to go back into the not-so-old films archive, and Tag is the chosen one today. While this movie is tagged as a comedy (pun very much intended 😊), it does have a fair bit of action in it. You only need to watch it to understand why.

We all know the game of tag. Those playing would pick someone to be it and he/she has to try to tag someone else to be it by hand touching or tapping them while the others try to avoid being tagged… and so it goes on and on. To put it simply, Randy Cilliano (Jake Johnson), Hogan Malloy (Ed Helms), Bob Callagan (Jon Hamm), Kevin Sable (Hannibal Buress), and Jerry Pierce (Jeremy Renner) are old school mates who, since then, have continued to play a serious game of tag even as adults. Every year, for the whole month of May, whoever is it has to tag someone else in the group.

It doesn’t matter where they are in the world, what work or job they are doing, what situation they are in, or however dangerous, there’s no limit to what they would do to tag each other, or escape being tagged. However, there is one member of the group that has never been it before – Jeremy Pierce. His ability to do anything or go to any lengths to avoid being tagged has stayed with him since their school days… and he’s not about to be it now. Except, now that he’s getting married, and word has gotten out that he might be retiring from the game, the others would have to work together to ensure that he gets tagged once and for all before that happens… no matter what! This group of friends pull some ridiculous, hysterical tactics and stunts that result in some entertaining and interesting consequences.

If you’re looking for a fun, laughter inspiring, feel-good, entertaining watch, then Tag is the film for you. The whole concept is appealing as well as exciting. Being based on a true story gives this funny and light-hearted movie a lot of depth. It actually makes you want to play the game that most of us haven’t played since we were children.

A balance of well-known, funny cast makes this film quite a memorable one to watch:

Funny guy, Ed Helm, known famously for playing Stu Price in 2009, 2011 & 2013 American comedy trilogy, Hangover (1, 2 & 3) was a brilliant choice for this film.

Another great pick was comedian, Hannibal Buress with his unique brand of humour. He played Griff in 2015’s American comedy film, Daddy’s Home.

While Marvel man, Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye/Clint Barton in 2016’s American Marvel superhero film, Captain America: Civil War, 2015 & 2019’s American Marvel superhero films, Avengers: Age of Ultron & Endgame) delivered some amusing action, Jon Hamm’s calm and mature hilarity gave it a lovely contrast. A lot of people remember him as Don Draper in 2015-2017’s American period drama TV series, Mad Men.

Throw in Jake Johnson and Isla Fisher, and you couldn’t have asked for a more complimentary cast.

The hilarious and quirky plot kept me engaged and laughing almost all the way through.

In this crazy times of uncertainty, abnormality, and a little melancholy, I would recommend watching Tag to take you back to your fun childhood days and put you in a positive and joyous mood. It’s no blockbuster, but it’s pretty good!!! Rating? 7.2 out 10.

Currently available to watch on Netflix.
