(Action-Thriller Sci-Fi, 2020)
What can I say about Tenet? A lot and yet, not much. Another complex one by the king of complex films himself, Director Christopher Nolan. This 2020 action movie stars John David Washington (Denzel Washington's son), Robert Pattinson, Kenneth Branagh and Elizabeth Debicki. I will try not to reveal too much, but there will be some indirect spoilers.
With words like Plutonium, Inversion and future being thrown around, you will be embroiled in a twilight world of complexities. Not surprising that Pattinson was in his element in this unique production. Another 'save the world' movie with Washington as the protagonist, Pattinson as his British ally - Neil, and Branagh as the Russian bad guy - Andrei Sator. Debicki played Kat, the ever beautiful and unloving wife of Andrei Sator.
It's hard enough trying to understand the intricacies of the film without having to deal with the distraction intermittently caused by Debicki's height. Goodness, that woman is tall!
The movie begins and ends with a bang; very captivating and full of action. Ten minutes forward and Ten backwards i.e. Ten - Net. To save the world, this requires the future, present and past worlds interconnecting. Lots of great and vivid fight scenes. The camera caught some really superb angles. The special effects were definitely awesome as scenes showing forward and backwards action all in one moving shot were remarkable to see. The best part of the film for me were the scattered twists. Definitely great directing and production. Superb acting and convincing portrayal of a Russian baddie by Branagh - the accent was top notch. Washington did well too, but I'm not convinced he was right for the role.
While you'll be able to understand adequately to get by, you won't understand enough to get that sense of fulfilment at the end of a film. You'll probably have to watch it at least twice to totally understand it. It takes a lot of concentration to stay focused and not lose interest, but it does offer a lot of action and whets your curiosity enough to keep you hanging on till the end. I'll rate it a 7 out of 10. For me, the complexities that made it brilliant were the same thing that rendered it a little lacking.
Christopher Nolan has once again delivered a unique piece. If you're a fan of 2010's sci-fi action film, Inception or 2014's epic-sci-fi film, Interstellar, you'll love this film. However, like the two previous films, I don't completely get it.
I'm curious to know your thoughts, and welcome any additional insights
