THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

(Romantic Comedy, 2020)

This creative theme was inspired by the real life broken heart experiences of Natalie Krinsky who wrote the screenplay of her directorial debut, The Broken Hearts Gallery.

Lucy Gulliver (Geraldine Viswanathan, who played Kayla in the 2018 American comedy Blockers) is a hoarder; a hoarder of keepsakes from all her past relationships which she always devoted some time to mourn. Her room looks like a pawn shop… literally!

She shares her apartment with her two childhood friends, plus one: the death obsessed Amanda (Molly Gordon) with her weirdly mute boyfriend, Jeff, and the philandering heartbreaker, Nadine (Phillipa Soo). Her two friends’ attempts to help release her from the unhealthy pattern have proven futile.

Working as an art gallery assistant for the talented and successful Eva Woolf (Bernadette Peters), Lucy loses her job the same night her sophisticated current boyfriend, Max Vora (Utkarsh Ambudkar) breaks up with her. Heartbroken, she gets into a stranger, Nick’s (Dacre Montgomery) car, mistakenly assuming it to be a cab; and that is when it all begins.

Subsequently, Lucy comes up with an idea and creates a website and space for the collection of memorabilia from people’s heart wrenching breakups. Naming it the Broken Hearts Gallery, she situated it in the reluctant Nick’s building project. The idea soon goes viral and she amasses a great following and responses.

This American romantic comedy is anything but boring and was overflowing with warmth and down to earth humour. I found Lucy’s quirky personality and humour annoying at first, but totally adorable later. She wasn’t your typical model-like main character, but quite natural and pretty just being who she is. Geraldine played the role to a Tee. The real and organic character of Nick was very becoming too. I just love Dacre’s eyes😍

All very well put together, including the lovely soundtrack. Quite a rich film about unexpected romance, life’s lessons, and growth. Not your usual blockbuster or high profile glitz and glam film, but equally as rewarding. Rating? 7 out of 10.

Yes Stephen. Geraldine's ability to absolutely entertain us through Lucy's humour is one of the things I like about this film.

I'm not a big lover of romantic films but found this film really entertaining. Geraldine kept the film full of humour and energy.
